Where is Zagreb, Croatia?
Zagreb is the capital of Croatia as well as its most populous city. It is in the northwestern part of Croatia.
What are the 8 must-visit cafes/restaurants in Zagreb?
These are the 8 restaurants that you have to visit in Zagreb.
-Quahwa
-Burek
-Mali Medo
-Pingvin
-La ล truk
-Purger
-Otto and Frank
-Konoba Didov San
1. Quahwa
If you want some of the best coffee in Zagreb, you have to visit Quahwa.
Their tagline is - coffee lovers only.
Located off Nikole Tesle near the main square (Ban Jelaฤiฤ Square), Quahwa has a courtyard and cozy indoor seating.
Quahwa is one of the few independent coffee roasters in Zagreb. They roast the coffee inside the cafe. If you sit on the first floor, you can watch the coffee-making process.
Zagreb has a massive coffee scene, and this place serves up a good cup of coffee to start your day.
The iced latte and hot latte were 18 kunas ($2.59).
2. Burek at Dolac Market
Burek is in Dolac Market, the central market, where Zagreb locals buy their food.
Be sure to take some time exploring Dolcac Market. The market is a must-see experience in Zagreb to get a feel for the city.
There are various sections of the market. If you want to try the Zagreb staple, Sir i vrhnje, head to the dairy section for this well-liked cheese.
You will know that you have reached the market when you see the red umbrellas.
Burek serves the tasty Croatian pastry with the same name.
The Croatian breakfast food consists of filo dough filled with cheese, meat, or apple.
We heard that burek with meat sometimes sells out, so be sure to get there earlier in the day if you have your heart set on a meat-filled burek.
There was only one table at Burek, but it looked like most people got their burek to go, or they ate it standing up on the adjacent deck.
Burek goes well with yogurt. At first, we did not know if we were supposed to mix the yogurt with the burek or drink the yogurt. The yogurt was thin, so we figured it was supposed to be a drink.
Burek is 15 kunas ($2.16) and the yogurt is 3 kunas ($.43).
3. Mali Medo
Mali Medi is on the charming Tkalฤiฤeva Street. This street is known for its outdoor terraces, pubs, cafes, and restaurants.
Mali Medo is a pub that serves beer from the Medvedgrad Brewery. The family-run brewery has been around since 1994. They were pioneers in the craft brewing scene in Zagreb.
This pub serves everything from traditional lagers to IPAs. They also have a food menu serving typical pub food like pizza and burgers.
Mali Medo has a huge outdoor terrace that can seat around 400 people. When the weather is nice, this is the perfect place to sit.
We recommend the Zlatni Medvjed (Pilsner) and the Baltazar (Hoppy Lager).
The .5L pilsner is 19 kuna ($2.74) and the .5L lager is 21 kuna ($3.03).
4. Pingvin (Penguin)
This legendary fast-food sandwich shop is a Zagreb institution. Known as Zagrebโs late-night snack joint, Pingvin is probably the most popular fast-food restaurant in the capital city.
The sandwiches are not pre-made, so they are fresh. You have a choice of various toppings and sauces.
We recommend the prosciutto and cheese sandwich.
Be sure to add garlic sauce to your sandwich for a garlic kick.
The bread is perfectly grilled at Pinvin. That is what makes a Pingvin sandwich stand out among the others.
The prosciutto and cheese sandwich is 32 kunas ($4.61).
5. La ล truk
When in Croatia, a popular food to try is ลกtrukli. La ล truk is the place to go to try the traditional Croatian specialty. ล trukli is the only food item on their menu.
At La ล truk, you can dine in the cozy indoor space or on the cute garden patio.
This famous dish can be boiled or baked, and it consists of dough, cottage cheese, sour cream, eggs, and various fillings.
ล trukli is like a cheesy lasagne.
We tried the blueberry ลกtrukli, and it was delicious. There are also sweet cheese, salty cheese, apple, walnuts, truffles, roasted pepper, and pumpkin seed ลกtrukli.
It comes in a baking dish piping hot, so make sure to wait until it has cooled down.
When ordering ลกtrukli, the restaurant needs about 20 minutes to prepare the dish.
The blueberry ลกtrukli costs 39 kunas ($5.62).
6. Purger
Open since 1932, Purger is in the heart of Zagreb and serves up traditional Croatian food.
If the weather is nice, we recommend dining outside in the courtyard.
The calamari with fries and duck with mlinci were both excellent.
Mlinci is a form of pasta soaked in the juices from the duck. It is similar to Yorkshire pudding and pairs nicely with the duck.
Both the duck and calamari cost 95 kunas ($13.69) each.
7. Otto & Frank
For breakfast, a nice spot to visit is Otto & Frank. It is on the charming Tkalฤiฤeva Street.
Sitting on the terrace enjoying coffee and breakfast is a perfect way to start your day in Zagreb.
Frank & Ottoโs signature dish is the Zagreb breakfast. It is one of their breakfast dishes served all day. The Zagreb breakfast features two crispy poached eggs served with cottage cheese, sour cream, ham, spring onions, radishes, and lettuce on toast.
The French toast is available until noon. It comes with peanut butter and raspberry jam or Nutella and banana.
The Zagreb breakfast is 46 kunas ($6.63), and the French toast is 33 kunas ($4.75). The cafe lattes at Frank & Otto are 20 kunas each ($2.88).
8. Konoba Didov San
For lunch, we highly recommend Konoba Didov San. This traditional Croatian tavern serves delicious Croatian food in a cozy atmosphere.
The decorations in this restaurant alone make it worth the visit, but the food is also spectacular.
Grandmaโs Pan is a dish at Konoba Didov San that we recommend. The juicy chicken dish comes in a clay pot with peppers, onions, and mushrooms.
Another delicious dish is the squid with potatoes. The squid comes grilled and has a remarkable garlic flavor.
