Why rent a camper van?
Iceland can get expensive, so we researched and decided that renting a camper van would be the most cost-effective way to travel around Iceland. By renting the camper van, we saved money. We didn't have to get hotels, rental cars, or tours to get to locations. If saving money sounds like a good idea to you, a camper van for your Iceland trip is a must.
Which company did we rent from?
We rented our camper van from Kuku Campers. When we first found the Kuku Camper website, we liked the companies quirkiness, types of vans, and prices. Their website was easy to use, and they had great reviews.
How far in advance did we rent the camper van?
We reserved our camper van online about two months before our trip. We recommend that you book in advance because even though they had a large selection of vehicles, and it was the shoulder season, there were not many vans left.
What is the procedure for picking up and dropping off the van?
After arriving at the airport, we waited for the shuttle van. It took us to the main office to get the camper van. We just had to specify our pick-up time.
The shuttle pick-up was free, but we had to pay for the shuttle drop-off from the main office to the airport.
The drive from the airport to the office took us about 35 minutes.
When we arrived, we filled out paperwork and paid the remaining balance.
There is also a small store where you can purchase extras for your trip. They had gas canisters, ponchos, coffee makers, mugs, and guitars.
A nice feature that we took advantage of was the free items left by other campers at the end of their trip. We got some paper towels and gas cans. We also left our unused items when we returned the van.
What kind of van did we rent?
We went with a Dacia Dokker. It is a two-seater that sleeps two people comfortably.
The Kuku Camper Vans have quirky sayings on the sides. They attract attention and are great conversation starters. We could immediately spot Kuku Camper Vans amid the sea of other vans.
Kuku Campers have 15 different camper vans from which to choose. We opted for the manual transmission with a heater. The manuals are cheaper, and luckily we can both drive them.
We debated whether or not to get a heater because we were traveling in September, so we were uncertain if we would need it. Our heater control panel fell behind the van wall while driving on the second day, so we only used it for two days.
Kuku Campers has a maintenance number that we could have called to repair the heater, but we were on a tight schedule.
What was included in the price of the camper van rental?
The van included the following: extra driver, gas burner, cooking and eating tools, cleaning tools and soap, a mattress, unlimited mileage, CDW Insurance, and an overnight heater.
What extras did we rent?
We opted for the following extras: inverter, sleeping bags, gas canister, Wifi 4G router, and an airport shuttle.
Kuku also has tables, chairs, ice chests, blankets, pillows, etc. So they have thought of everything that you could need on your Iceland adventure.
The wifi router and inverter were helpful on our trip. The wifi router was portable, so we always had wifi, and the inverter helped keep all of our things charged.
After checking the van for any damage and getting a crash course in how to use the portable burner, we were ready for our Iceland adventure to begin.
We took the van around Iceland's entire Ring Road. The journey was eight days.
What was it like living in the van for 8 days?
We loved having the freedom to travel around Iceland in our van.
We could cook a meal wherever we were. Cooking our meals saved us a ton of money.
We went grocery shopping in the US before our trip to Iceland. We were glad we did this because the food in Iceland is pricey. We did have to go to the grocery for a few things while in Iceland, but being prepared saved us a lot of money.
The campsites had kitchen areas where we could wash our dishes, so even though we did not have a sink with water in the van, we could use the facilities at the campsites.
We could arrive at a campsite after a day of exploring without making prior reservations.
The campsites also had shower and toilet facilities that we could use.
Some of the campsites had laundry facilities.
Was the camper van comfortable?
Yes, it was comfortable and convenient for several reasons.
We had plenty of room for our luggage.
We could use the seating area to do work or to eat.
At night we would easily convert the back of the van into a bed in less than a few minutes.
The sleeping bags we rented kept us warm. But during the winter months, having a heater would be a must.
The camper van also had privacy curtains in the back and the front to keep the sun out.
How much did the camper van rental cost?
Renting the camper van allowed us to explore Iceland in a budget-friendly way.
