Where is Belgrade, Serbia?
Belgrade is in the northern part of Serbia in the middle of the country. Not only is Belgrade Serbia's capital city, but it is also the largest city in Serbia. Belgrade is sometimes called the city that never sleeps because of its nightlife scene. It is one of the oldest cities in Europe and is known for its fortresses, cafes, and churches.
What should you eat in Belgrade?
These are the 5 Serbian Foods You Must Try in Belgrade.
Burek (Serbian breakfast pastry)
Ćevapi (sausages)
Rakia (Serbian national drink)
Ajvar (Serbian red pepper spread)
Karadjordjeva (Serbian breaded cutlet)

1. Burek
Bobe
Bobe is a traditional Serbian bakery. After reading great reviews about the old-fashioned bakery, we decided to try it out.
We recommend going there to try a popular Belgrade breakfast food called burek. Burek is phyllo dough stuffed with lots of cheese or meat and cheese. It is round in shape and then cut into quarters. The burek at Bobe was quite filling and had just the right amount of greasiness.
A fantastic place to enjoy your burek is at the Belgrade Fortress. It is free to enter, and you will get fabulous views of Belgrade from the top.
A slice of burek is 168 RSD ($1.50). Be sure to have cash.
2. Ćevapi
Ćevabdžinica Cica
After breakfast, you can wander through the fortress and make your way to Belgrade's main pedestrian street Knez Mihailova. Right off of Knez Mihailova is Ćevabdžinica Cica, and they serve up some of the best ćevapi in Belgrade.
Ćevapi are grilled meat sausages served with onions and bread (somun). Our meal at Ćevabdžinica Cica was delicious!
The ćevapi dish is 310 RSD ($2.75).
3 & 4. Rakia and Ajvar
Rakia Bar
After the delicious ćevapi, we recommend visiting the Rakia Bar, which is in the center of Belgrade.
Here they serve the Serbian national drink Rakia (brandy).
We tried several types of Rakia (plum, apricot, plum with lavender and honey, and cherry). The plum rakia is the most traditional kind in Serbia.
While at Rakia Bar, we learned that you should sip the rakia instead of drinking it like a shot.
We also had a nice snack of ajvar (Serbian red pepper spread) and breadsticks. Rakia Bar is a must-visit if you are in Belgrade. While at the Rakia Bar, we received the best hospitality.
One glass of rakia is 290 RSD ($2.50).
5. Karadjordjeva
Dva Jelena (The Two Deer Restaurant)
The last stop on our Serbian food tour in Belgrade is at Dva Jelena to try Karadjordjeva. Dva Jelena is a Serbian restaurant with a lovely outdoor terrace to enjoy your meal. While we were there, musicians were serenading guests, so it had a romantic atmosphere.
Karadjordjeva was amazing! It is a Serbian dish made with veal or pork and stuffed with kajmak (a dairy product similar to clotted cream). The popular Serbian dish is breaded and then fried.
The kajmak was the star of the dish. It was so yummy we used bread to sop up all of it.
Our meal at Dva Jelena was 1,200 RSD ($10.65).
