Looking for a tour of Salzburg?
1. Kapuzinerberg (a hill with views of Salzburg)
We think a great first stop in Salzburg should be at Kapuzinerberg. Kapuzinerberg is a hill on the eastern side of Salzburg's Salzach River. It is a little bit of a hike to make it to the top, but worth it for the views.
From the top of the hill, there is a lookout point where you can get spectacular views of Salzburg.
2. Getreidegasse (famous shopping street)
After Kapuzinerberg, we recommend making your way to Salzburg's Old Town (Altstadt). When you enter the old town, be sure to wander around Getreidegasse. The name translates to grain alley and is Salzburg’s famous shopping street.
Be sure to look up at the decorative signs above the storefronts. Some of them are pretty elaborate.
3. Mozarts Geburtshaus (Mozart's birthplace)
While wandering down Getreidegasse, you will run into Mozart’s birthplace (Mozarts Geburtshaus). The famous composer was born on the third floor of No. 9 Getreidegasse in 1756.
Mozart’s birthplace is open for visits, and it costs € 12.00.
4. Cafe Konditorei Fürst
Also located on Getreidegasse at the end of the street, you can find Cafe Konditorei Fürst. Cafe Konditorei Fürst has the world famous Salzburger Mozartkugel (Mozart Balls).
You can sample these famous chocolate balls at Cafe Konditorei Fürst. The Mozart Balls are chocolate balls that have marzipan and pistachios.
One Salzburger Mozartkugel is € 1.60.
5. Unversitätsplatz (University Square)
After trying the chocolate balls, you can make your way to University Square. University Square is the market square in Salzburg.
We came here to try a pretzel from Salzburger Brezen. Salzburger Brezen sell many different types of pretzels. Ours was a bit dry, but we have read reviews that this stand has the best pretzels in Salzburg. These pretzels were the size of my head.
One pretzel is € 3.90
6. Residenzplatz (Residence Square)
After leaving University Square, you can make your way to Residenzplatz. From here, you can visit the Salzburg Cathedral and Residence fountain.
Residenzbrunnen (Residence fountain) is a historic landmark in the center of Residenzplatz.
7. Mozartplatz (Mozart Square)
Very close to Residenzplatz is another square to check out in Salzburg called Mozartplatz. In Mozart Square, you will find a statue of the famous composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
8. Kapitelplatz (Chapter Square)
Right around the corner from Mozartplatz is Kapitelplatz. This square features a giant chess board. There were also several souvenir stands set up in this square.
From Kapitelplatz, we could also see Fortress Hohensalzburg (Salzburg's Castle).
9. Bärenwirt (lunch)
After a busy day of sightseeing, you will probably be looking for a place to try Austrian cuisine.
We recommend Bärenwirt. It has been in business since 1663 and is famous for its fried chicken.
The chicken was great, but we loved the potato salad at Bärenwirt.
The deep-fried chicken with potato salad is €17.90.
We also recommend the Kaspressknödelsuppe. Kaspressknödelsuppe is a cheese dumpling in a clear soup.
The soup is € 5.90.
10. Schloss Mirabell (Mirabell Palace)
Our last thing to do in Salzburg is to visit Mirabell Palace.
The palace has the Pegasus Fountain, a filming location for the Sound of Music.
The Mirabell Gardens are spectacular! The gardens were our favorite spot in Salzburg.
Entrance to the gardens is free.
We also recommend visiting the Marble Hall, which is said to be one of the most beautiful wedding halls in the world. It is inside Mirabell Palace, and the entrance is free.
